Stucco Texture Matching in Los Angeles
Texture matching is what separates a repair you notice from one you do not. The material is the easy part; matching aggregate size, application rhythm, trowel pressure and years of weathering is the skill.
We match smooth, sand, dash, lace and custom textures on repairs, additions and partial elevations throughout Los Angeles County for commercial buildings where a visible patch reads as neglect, and for homes where it reads as a bad contractor.
What actually has to match
- Texture type — sand, dash, lace, skip trowel, smooth or a hybrid the original crew invented
- Aggregate size and density, which control how coarse the surface reads
- Application technique — hand-troweled, machine-sprayed, knocked down, floated
- Direction and rhythm of the trowel or spray pattern
- Color, including how the existing wall has faded on that specific elevation
- Plane and thickness so the repair does not sit proud of the wall
How we approach a match
We start by reading the existing finish up close: aggregate, pattern, and how it was applied. On older LA buildings the original texture is frequently a variation that is not in any product catalog, which is why matching is done by eye and hand rather than by ordering a named finish.
For anything visible or large, we apply a sample in an inconspicuous area and check it in daylight before committing to the full repair. Texture looks different wet than dry and different in morning light than at 4pm.
Honest limits on matching
A perfect match on a heavily weathered wall is not always achievable. Twenty years of UV and airborne dirt change a color in ways fresh material cannot reproduce, and some sprayed patterns were made with equipment nobody runs anymore.
When that is the case we say so and give you the options: accept a very close but detectable repair, extend the finish to a natural break such as a corner or control joint, or re-finish the full elevation for uniformity. What we do not do is promise an invisible patch and hand over a visible one.
Where texture matching matters most
On multifamily and retail properties, repairs happen continuously — impact damage, removed signage, conduit and equipment changes, water intrusion repairs. Without matching, an elevation slowly turns into a quilt of patch outlines.
For property managers maintaining a building over years, having the texture documented and repeatable is worth more than any single repair. We keep notes on the finishes we match for repeat clients.

Frequently Asked Questions
Can you match any stucco texture?
We match the great majority of textures found on Los Angeles buildings. Heavily weathered color and unusual legacy spray patterns are the two limits, and we identify those before work starts rather than after.
Will the repair still be visible after matching?
A well-matched repair on a normally weathered wall generally blends. On badly faded elevations, some color difference can remain until the new material weathers in.
Do you provide sample areas before completing the work?
For visible or large-scale matching, yes. A sample is applied and reviewed in daylight before the full repair proceeds.
Which finishes do you commonly match?
Smooth, sand, dash, lace and skip trowel, plus Santa Barbara and other hand-troweled variations.
