Reading a crack before repairing it
Not all cracks mean the same thing. Fine map cracking is typically shrinkage in the finish coat and is cosmetic. Straight vertical cracks often follow a control joint or a framing member. Diagonal cracks running off window and door corners are stress concentrations from movement. Horizontal cracking low on a wall, especially with staining or soft material, usually points to moisture.

Water damage and what is behind the wall
Stucco is designed to get wet and drain. Failures usually come from what is behind or above it — flashing at parapets and decks, unsealed penetrations, roof edges, deck-to-wall junctions, or a weep screed that was buried by hardscape or landscaping.
When we open a wall we can see the condition of the paper and lath. If the barrier is compromised, the section is rebuilt with new paper, lath and accessories before it is re-plastered. Covering wet or rusted lath with fresh material simply moves the problem a year or two into the future.

The hardest part of stucco repair is the blend. Matching an aged finish means matching texture, aggregate size, application technique and color that has weathered for years.
We feather repairs into the existing texture and match the finish as closely as the original allows. Where a patch would remain visible — a heavily faded elevation, or a texture that cannot be replicated exactly — we say so upfront and give you the alternative, usually finishing to a natural break such as a corner, control joint or full elevation.

Soft or hollow-sounding areas, staining, rust bleed, efflorescence and repeat cracking in the same spot are all indicators. Confirming it requires opening a small area — which is part of the evaluation when those signs are present.
